B.E.L.I.E.V.E. is a curriculum for Peer2Peer Mentoring based on State Standards for counseling and character education while including elements of compassion projects for anti-bullying campaigns.

The purpose of B.E.L.I.E.V.E. Peer2Peer Mentoring is to help students understand who they are, why they matter, and how they can leave a lasting impact on the world around them. This is delivered through the safe environment with an upperclassmen mentor who embodies the six pillars of character for best practices and healthy outcomes. We have integrated modules for physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development. As well, the curriculum is designed to help the students understand dependence, independence, and interdependence to work within a collaborative, team setting.
The mentoring group at HHS has helped to change the culture at Hanceville High School. Mr. John Williams has done a fabulous job of convincing our students to make good choices on a daily basis over the last three years at HHS. I have seen a huge decline in our student discipline referrals and an increase in student attendance as well as standardized testing. In the month of February we only had 7 discipline referrals in the entire school, compared to 49 three years ago in February. Hanceville High School finished last in our system with attendance in 2013. In the past three years, we have finished either first or second in our system. I take great pride in saying that the culture at HHS has changed for the better.
Each Tuesday, Mr Williams, meets with a selected group of students at Hanceville High School. These students are a hand-picked group of upperclassmen that are considered the leaders of our school. We call this group “Mentors”. The mentors meet to discuss the character education lesson that will be taught on Wednesday during Mentor time. Mr. Williams meets with the entire 9th grade every Wednesday to discuss character issues that face young teenagers in today’s society. Once Mr. Williams completes the instruction to the group, he then turns the class over to the 25 plus mentors to work in small groups. Our freshman enjoy getting to know the upperclassmen on a personal level. The mentors also help each freshman on how to become successful leaders at HHS.
